Conference to debate Faith Schools- Sunday 19th March 2017

February 2, 2017 2:37 PM
By Toby Keynes

Spring Conference in York will definitely be debating faith schools, on the morning of Sunday 19th March.

So by coming to conference, speaking and voting in the debate, you can help to decide our party's policy on faith schools for the coming years.

Our Fringe meeting on the Friday (details in accompanying article) will give an ideal opportunity to examine the issues and prepare for the debate.

The motion itself has not yet been published, but the issue that will almost certainly attract all the attention, and which matters most, will be on faith school admissions:

  • should state-funded schools be able to cater exclusively to children from one religious denomination or belief?
  • should state-funded schools be able to discriminate in admissions, so that children from one religion have a much better chance of getting in than others?

Our party's policy on faith schools could lead the way for other parties (as they did for same-sex marriage and humanist marriage); it could even lead to government legislation (same-sex marriage again).

So please do register for Conference, join in the debate and vote for a future in which religious discrimination and segregation have no place in state-funded schools.
